Carnival traditions meet
Friday May 17th and Saturday May 18th 2013
The international competition Battle of Carnival Bands is a cultural event with carnival traditions from all over the world. Carnival cultures from Sardinia, Netherland, Brazil, Belgium, French-Westindian Islands, West Africa and Denmark are meeting in Aalborg and create one big carnival – a unique event for Aalborg as for Denmark.
The participating groups are invited to participate in the competition from requirements as high level, costumes, music and dance. In the competition the groups are evaluated by three parameters. First of all performance, which is about the power of penetration towards the audience and the overall impression of dance, movement, choreography and music. Second, the groups are evaluated (on?) their costumes, with emphasis on esthetics, idea and performance. Last, the groups are evaluated (on?) the story or the theme, which is shown at the carnival.

Participating groups 2013
At this years carnival the French-Westindian group Chayé Yo will participate once again. The dance and music group derives from Paris, and the music is inspired by traditions from the French-Westindian Islands. The groups is instantly recognizable, while they entertain in blue and yellow costumes, which with guarantee will cause attention in the street scene.
De Sjatrellen is a Belgian group, which derives from the city Aals. The carnival in Aalst, where the group is arisen, is not a traditional carnival, but a carnival with focus on satire. The group designs new costumes every year, and this year De Sjatrellen will be dresses as angels, which is perfect in addition to this years theme; Angels and Demons.
Once again Dunkelfolket participates in Aalborg Carnival. The characteristic of the group is beautiful hand carved masks, which is made by the artist Kirsten Gitz-Johansen. Every single mask represent different sides of the human nature. The group has entertained in for instance Denmark, Greenland, Germany and Italy. Dunkelfolket is not a part of the competition.
KarnevalsKoloritterne, which former was known as Klub Karneval, arose in 2008, because they wanted to make the parade more spectaculary. The group loves making experiences, and in 2011 they won a special price in Battle of Carnival Bands. KarnevalsKoloritterne entertains in new outfits every year.
London School of Samba
London School of Samba will put an extra pressure on the samba rhythms with their Brazilian inspired entertainment. The group is one of the absolute top groups, and they will entertain in Aalborg for the first time. London School of Samba has participated in for example Nothing Hill Carnival, Themsen Festival and Coburg International Samba Festival.
The international carnival artist Mahogany collaborates once again with Hasseris Gymnasium. Mahogany provides costumes to the international class at Hasseris Gymnasium, who participates in Aalborg Carnival dressed in the costumes. In 2011 Hasseris Gymnasiums’ international class won a special price because of their fantastic entertainment. The group is not a part of the competition.
The samba group Poco Loco from Aalborg participates in Aalborg Carnival for the 31st time. The group represents a part of the Brazilian carnival traditions with both samba dance and music. Poco Loco is inspired by Brazil and particulary Rio de Janeiro’s big carnival. Their primary focus is the Brazilian samba batucada, which means street samba.
It is guaranteed that the Danish medieval quartet Ramashang will bring humor and atmosphere to this year’s carnival, where they will play medieval songs on the reaper, flutes and drums. Look forward to experience the four gentlemen, who for the first time will participate in Battle of Carnival Bands, where they will take part in the parade and the stage show, but not the competition.
The winner of Battle of Carnival Bands 2009 is back in Aalborg. The Dutch group Segura! manage a wealth of Brazilian drum rhythms, which they combine with costumes inspired by science fiction and fatasy movies. The group plays on authentic Brazilian drums.
Semente do Samba
Semente do Samba from Aalborg is a newly etablished group, which is inspired by Rio de Janeiro. In the group participates samba people from all over Europe. The group collaborate with Fantasy Fabrikken, who creates costumes for other, and altso with Camp Carnival at Aalborg University, where a group of students has won a competition about designing a float.
Shademakers is a German carnival group, which was founded in Manchester in England in 1991. The group makes big, funny and imaginative costumes, which is inspired by the big carnival costumes in the Caribbean carnival. Besides Aalborg Carnival the group participates in Notting Hill Carnival and the Thames Festival.
Touch of Africa
Touch of Africa is an African inspired group, who for the third time participates in Aalborg Carnival. The group introduces new rhythms and dance steps every year, and this year the dance steps will be inspired by dance from East and Westafrican countries. The music is inspired by oldeer and newer African music. Touch of Africa is not a part of the competition.
Urthos & Buttudos og Sos Bundhos
Two Sardinian groups participate in Aalborg Carnival as one jointly group. Urthos & Buttudos from the village Fonni carry traditional masks inspired by the old agro-pastorale world, and they show their interpretation of a fight between human and animals. Sos Bundhos from Orani carry masks, which represent a mixture between a human and an animal.
The Westafrican drum and dance group Vimoroz participates in Aalborg Carnival again. Vimoroz has won Battle of Carnival Bands four times, latest in 2011. The group consists of happy international and national artistic people, who is driven by engagement and the social bond the group members in between.
